TYPOGRAPHY assignment-3, Type and Sound.
(course facilitator- Julie Fairless)
January 30, 2008.
A new day and a new assignment. I'm finding this assignment quite interesting as well as challenging.
The previous submission of type and composition book had kind of drained all the energy out of us and it was clearly visible in the assignment we did in class... absolutely shady job.. probably thats the reason why Julie gave us half a day for "independent study". but that was needed..
Thanks Julie.
Classroom exercise: illustrating situation/word with type.

Timeline:
9:30- 11:00 Reading
11:00- 12:00 Presentation by Matt, Rustam and Arvind.
12:00- 2:30 Assignment: representing the given words or situations using type.
2:30 onwards independent study.
3:00- 7:30 and 9:00- 2:30 a.m working on the type and composition book and course
documentation

January 31, 2008.
What a way to begin the day! I ran from the old campus to the new campus to submit the type book and the documentation to Julie.. reached on time... But figured out how "binding can really make your book look like a mess, no matter how beautiful the fonts, composition and the layouts are".. thats what exactly happened with my book! I was kind of disheartened to the final outcome of the book more because I had seen the "pretty pages" beautifully photocopied.
But anyway.. thats how it is.. can't do much about it now!
Looking at everyone else's books gave me a few positive and a few negative insights about book-cover design, binding, page layout, etc.
A reading on something new related to type. Sound and Type. I had definitely used and heard this earlier but never paid attention to it. The article clearly mentioned how type and sound or type and music ran parallel.
Thank you Avantika for asking Julie to tell us the names of type books.. very much needed... Now i'm waiting for some cash so that i can buy atleast two of the books mentioned below.
also the class assignment on illustrating amplitude, pitch, timbre and duration was relevant to the article read in the morning and also helped in the latter exercises.
the presentation was definitely needed, especially the part that dealt with orientation of type. I recall how, in foundation, I was "impressed" by the way we could stack letters one on top of the other in illustrator and also write text along the vertical axis. Now I see, how it does not work and does not make sense.
Julie handed in the new brief for another assignment due on 7th Feb. The brief kind of confused me. And my questions kind of pissed off Julie. Sorry Julie, but I really took time to understand it clearly.
Books worth buying:
9:30- submitting the book and documentation to Julie
9:30- 10:00 discussing the type books that everyone had made.
10:00- 11:00 Reading- Hearing Type by Frank Armstrong.
11:00- 12:15 Discussion on typography books worth buying
12:30- 2:30 class assignment: illustrating the following words: Amplitude, Pitch, Timbre,
duration
3:00- 3:30 Discussion of the assignment done in class.
3:30- 4:30 Presentation on typography (technical details, terms used, "type crime")
4:30- 5:00 Discussion of the new brief.

February 2, 2008 (at home)
Timeline:
9:30 p.m- 11:30 p.m Finding songs, selecting a set of 12 to 15 words, editing the song accordingly and listening to the song over and over again to be familiar with the instrument and vocals.

I got stuck badly.. did not know where to start from. once I got the starting point, I did not know where to go next.. it was almost like a dog chasing his tail in a circle...
Thumbnails of the song.

Timeline:
5:00 p.m - 6:00 p.m listening to the song again and observing the beats.
7:30 p.m- 9:00 p.m working on correlating the time and pitch of the vocals and instruments of the song.
10:00p.m - 11:00 p.m explore the song with respect to typography and design: colours, typefaces, the
overall feel of the song etc.
11:00- 12:30 making 3 thumbnails.

February 4, 2008.
Today Jayshree and Suchitra surprised us all by coming to the class just when the reading began. They were also quite interested in seeing for type and sound work together. And we got some very constructive criticism on our work from them. The discussion helped me clear the confusion and break the "circle". Thank you Suchitra, Thank you Jayshree.
Separating the songs into separate layers definitely worked. It helped me understand the duration of beats and the duration on vocals and instruments to a better extent. this hence enhanced the elements that were placed on the time and the pitch axis respectively.
This understanding made it easier to visualize the song.
The two layers of the song: vocals and drum like instrument

Timeline:
9:30- 11:15 Reading
11:15- 11:45 compiling and putting up the thumbnails of the song done over the weekends.
11:45- 1:00 Discussion of thumbnails with Julie, Jayshree and Suchitra.
1:00- 3:15 working on the thumbnails- separating the song into layers of different instrument
and vocals.
3:15- 4:00 Class Discussion of the work done.
9:30p.m- 1:30a.m Thumbnails on actual size gateway, documenting the work, compiling the
readings

February 5, 2008.
I found it important to work on the right size because i was having major trouble in fitting the vocals on the paper when I scaled down the size of the artwork. Working on actual size also gave a clear idea as to how I would work on the comp and how the final outcome would look (a feel of it).
This paritcular assignment, I felt that every discussion that we have had as a class, helped me take my work forward to a higher level each day. I could see the progress and the implementation of the points discussed in class and observed in the presentation.
Timeline:
9:00- 10:10 Reading followed by Discussion.
10:10- 10:30 break and time to put up work
10:30- 11:45 Class discussion on the thumbnails (with different layers, each done on a separate
gateway)
11:45- 12:35 Discussing the work with Julie individually.
2:00- 4:30 working on the comp- composition and layout, selecting fonts, trying out different
fonts etc.
11:00 p.m- 3:00 a.m finalizing fonts, and composition. working on illustrating the sounds of the
instruments and experimenting with the symbols to represent drums.

February 6, 2008.
Oh! what a day. Whole day all of us were glued to the computer, trying to fix things that did not work. The discussion in the morning kind of disappointed me since I was at a point where I had lots to edit, lots to add and lots to ponder upon and all this was to be done in no time. Yet i decided to not panic like I normally do and just work step by step starting with refining what I already had. By lunch time, I had managed to come up with something concrete and though not "excellent", it was satisfactory. Discussing it with Julie after lunch further gave me a better direction to work along. By 4pm I just managed to hand in my pen drive to Julie.

I've been feeling bad for Pallavi who went to print all our files at Indigo. I'm sure she must have had a very tiring day. Thanks you Pallavi. Thanks a lot!
The final visual

Timeline:
9:30- 10:40 Discussion the reading and writing a paragraph on the the chosen type.
10:40- 11:00 printing the work, putting it up and tea break.
11:00- 12:00 Discussion on the work put up on the walls- the prints of the work done on comp.
12:00- 1:30 working on the comp- correcting the typographical errors, enhancing the
composition and adding colours to the vocals.
1:45- 4:00 final design of the artwork- editing errors, adding symbol for the drums and guitar,
and the last "touch-ups"
4:00- Submission of the digital work to Pallavi and Julie for printing.
